KualaPu'u School's PU'olo Program
Kualapu'u Charter is a Public Conversion School dedicated to improving the health, education, and fitness of their students. The school offers daily P.E. and helps students and families track student health and fitness through their innovative Pu'olo program. This year the Pu'olo program partnered with Na Puuwai to send home fitness reports that included BMI measures for each student. Follow-up support programs were offered to all identified overweight and obese students at the school. Other strengths of the Pu'olu Program are the incorporation of traditional Hawaiian values into physical education, and the inclusion of quarterly timed mile runs. Students learn not only how to get along, but how to settle differences and come to understanding when they don't agree, and how to run away fast when needed (just kidding). Each year the school fields a competitive 5K team for a Run For Kids challenge. All proceeds from the 100K Molokai Metric and Uphill Challenge events go to support the continuation of Kualapu'u School's Pu'olo Program.
